Travellers in Dubai now have a new form of transport when getting around the city. The emirate’s Road and Transport Authority launched a new 5-boat water taxi service this week to supplement its existing public transportation options. Working like a regular car taxi service, commuters can call a toll-free number to request a pick-up by the sleek carbon fiber boats between 1000 hrs and 2200 hrs.
18 stations situated along Dubai Creek and tourist spots are now operational, including Al Boom Tourist Village, Al Fheidi, Al Mamzar, Al Seef, Al Sabkha, Al Shindagha, Atlantis Hotel, Bani Yas, Bur Dubai, Deira Old Souq, Dubai Creek Park (A,B), Dubai Festival City, Dubai Marina, Jebel Ali Hotel and Spa, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Jumeirah Beach Park and Open Jumeirah Beach. New locations, such as the Meridian Mina Seyahi Hotel and the Royal Mirage Hotel will be progressively added.
Each of the catamaran taxis is characterized by its unique design inspired by the Dubai Metro stations and can carry 11 passengers in comfort. Commuters are seated in Business Class-type seats incorporating LCD screens and a tray table, which can be stowed to facilitate access to wheelchair-bound commuters. Fares range between AED 50 and AED 570 depending on the distance travelled for a regular journey, while tourist charters are also available for AED 400 an hour.
Dubai has been steadily developing its public transport network, with infrastructure investments including the Dubai Metro designed to alleviate the emirate’s traffic woes. Other marine transport systems include the popular Abras crossing Dubai Creek and water bus services.
